How to Clear Out a Garage in Meridian Before Winter

How to Clear Out a Garage in Meridian Before Winter

Every fall we hear the same thing from folks around Meridian: "I want to park in my garage this winter, but I can't even walk through it." Summer projects, old furniture, boxes from the last move, and a few things nobody remembers buying all end up in the same place.

We're All-Ridge Hauling, based in Star and serving Meridian and the rest of the Treasure Valley. We clear out a lot of garages this time of year. Here's how we'd tackle yours, whether you do most of it yourself or hand the whole thing to us.

Why clear the garage before winter

Once the first hard freeze hits, nobody wants to spend a Saturday sorting boxes in a cold garage. Getting it done in the fall means:

  • Room to park, so you're not scraping frost off the windshield every morning.

  • Space to store the patio furniture, hoses and yard tools you'll pull out in spring.

  • A chance to spot leaks, pests or damaged items before they get worse over the winter.

Step 1: Pick a day and set up three zones

Block out a morning. Clear a spot on the driveway and make three zones:

  1. Keep. Things you use and want back in the garage.

  2. Donate or sell. Things in good shape that someone else could use.

  3. Haul away. Broken, worn out, or just not worth the space.

Be honest with yourself. If it's been in a box since the last move and you didn't miss it, it probably belongs in zone 2 or 3.

Step 2: Work one wall at a time

Don't pull everything out at once. Start with one wall or one corner, sort it fully, then move to the next. You'll see progress fast, and if you run out of daylight, the garage isn't left half-empty with everything on the driveway.

Step 3: Donate what still has life in it

Furniture, tools, sporting goods, kids' bikes and household items in good shape can go to local donation centers and thrift stores around Meridian and Boise. Call ahead, because many places won't take items that are stained, broken or missing parts. Anything they turn away can go in your haul-away pile.

Step 4: Know what goes where

This is the part that trips people up. A few common garage items need special handling:

  • Paint. We take dried paint. If a can is mostly empty, leave the lid off somewhere safe until it dries out. Wet paint needs to go to a household hazardous waste drop-off.

  • Tires: we take these for an extra fee.

  • Chemicals, solvents, fuels and batteries: we can't take these. Take them to a household hazardous waste drop-off or a battery recycling bin.

  • Old fridges and freezers. Appliances with refrigerant cost extra. Please disconnect any appliance before we arrive.

  • Heavy materials. Concrete, dirt, rock, brick and similar loads cost extra because of the weight.

  • Regular junk. Old furniture, boxes, broken shelving, scrap wood, yard equipment, mattresses and general clutter are what we haul every day.

When we quote, we'll tell you up front if anything in your pile falls into one of those extra categories, so there are no surprises.

Step 5: Get the haul-away pile gone

This is where most garage projects stall. The sorting is done, but now there's a mountain of stuff and no truck to move it. That's where junk removal in Meridian comes in.

Here's how we do it:

  • Free quote, fixed written price. Text us photos or book online and we'll give you a fixed written price before we lift anything. If there's more on site than you showed us, we'll quote the extra separately first.

  • You don't need to be home. Leave the pile in the garage or driveway, head to work, and we'll send you photos when the job's done.

  • Curbside costs less. If you can get everything out to the curb or driveway, our curbside option costs less than having us go in and load it.

  • No travel fee in the Treasure Valley. We're based in Star, and Meridian is right in our backyard.

  • Same-day jobs when spots are open. If you're ready today, ask. Sometimes we can be there the same day.

Step 6: Set the garage up to stay clear

Once the floor is open again, keep it that way:

  • Put shelving or wall hooks up so things live off the floor.

  • Keep a donation bin by the door and drop it off when it fills.

  • Mark a spot for seasonal stuff so it doesn't spread.

  • Do a quick sweep each spring and fall so it never gets this full again.
